Barcelona put transfer pursuit of Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho on hold

Barcelona have cooled their transfer pursuit of Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho after switching focus, according to reports in Spain.

Liverpool will be delighted to hear the news as the Reds have consistently rejected all approaches for their star man.

Spanish outlet Sport claim Coutinho privately told Barcelona he would be happy to join the Catalan giants this summer.

Barcelona representatives met with Coutinho’s agent in Brazil last week and held positive talks.

But, Liverpool’s firm stance on a €90million asking price has put Barcelona off and they will now turn their attentions to Marco Verratti.

The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder has already decided he wants to join Barcelona and would cost much less than Coutinho.

As well as the money issue, Barcelona have prioritised signing a midfielder with a substantial physical presence.

Coutinho has his heart set on signing for Barcelona one day and is a massive admirer of the coaching set up in Spain.

Barcelona have not given up hope of eventually securing Coutinho and may steal re-ignite their pursuit this summer.

PSG could follow Liverpool’s example and refuse to do business, which would prompt Barcelona to try and sign Coutinho.

The Brazil international has already rejected an offer to join PSG and will not move to any club other than a Spanish one.
