Bayelsa Queens beat Remo Stars Ladies to go top of NWFL Super Six Standing
Bayelsa Queens continued their unbeaten run in the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Super Six after beating Remo Stars Ladies 2-0 on Tuesday. The match was the final game of matchday three, and it gave the tournament debutants their first defeat.
Before this game, Remo Stars Ladies had beaten Edo Queens and Naija Ratels in Ikenne. But they could not match the experience and strength of Bayelsa Queens.
Bayelsa Queens arrived at the Super Six without losing any game this season. They began the playoffs with a win over Rivers Angels and later drew with Nasarawa Amazons.
They wasted no time in taking the lead, as Chinwe Akabike scored in the 12th minute. Sefiat Idris then made it 2-0 in the 25th minute with what many believe is the best goal of the tournament so far. Bayelsa Queens now have seven points from three matches and remain unbeaten.
In another match, Nasarawa Amazons also continued their fine form by defeating Rivers Angels 2-1. Jenat Akekeromowei scored twice in the first half to give Nasarawa the win. Catherine Kenneth scored for Rivers Angels in the second half, but the most decorated team in NWFL history could not complete a comeback.
Nasarawa Amazons now also have seven points and are level with Bayelsa Queens, who top the table only on goal difference.
Edo Queens, the defending champions, bounced back from a 1-0 loss to Remo Stars Ladies and a 1-1 draw with Rivers Angels to get their first win of the Super Six. Emem Essien scored twice in the first half to help Edo Queens beat Naija Ratels.
Naija Ratels, who are yet to win in this year’s Super Six, had no answer for Essien. She scored her first goal in the 26th minute and added a second in the 37th minute.
After three rounds of matches, Bayelsa Queens lead the table with seven points, followed by Nasarawa Amazons with the same number of points but lower goal difference. Remo Stars Ladies are third with six points.
Edo Queens are in fourth place with four points, Rivers Angels have just one point, and Naija Ratels are bottom of the table with three losses in three games.
