Bayelsa Queens Crowned 2024/2025 NWFL Champions in Thrilling Super Six Finale

In one of the most dramatic finishes in Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) history, Bayelsa Queens emerged champions of the 2024/2025 NWFL Premiership Super Six after a nerve-wracking final day of action at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.

Going into the final matchday, four teams Nasarawa Amazons (8 points), Edo Queens, Bayelsa Queens, and Remo Stars Ladies (all on 7 points) were still in contention for the title and a coveted spot in the CAF Women’s Champions League.

With all games kicking off simultaneously to ensure fairness, the tension was palpable as the league’s top sides took to different pitches in Ikenne, chasing history.

Bayelsa Take Charge Early

Facing bottom-placed Naija Ratels, Bayelsa Queens were favourites and showed intent early, opening the scoring in the 27th minute to momentarily go top of the standings. But their lead was short-lived as Naija Ratels stunned them with a 43rd-minute equalizer, making it 1-1 at halftime.

In the second half, Bayelsa Queens came out with renewed purpose and regained the lead almost immediately after the restart, making it 2-1 in the 46th minute. The result would prove crucial.

Elsewhere: Rivals Cancel Each Other Out

The heavyweight clash between league leaders Nasarawa Amazons and defending champions Edo Queens ended in a goalless draw, dealing a blow to both teams’ title hopes. Meanwhile, Rivers Angels dented Remo Stars Ladies slim title ambitions with a dominant performance, scoring early and doubling their lead by the 48th minute.

Final Standings and Glory for Bayelsa

With Bayelsa Queens holding on to their 4-1 lead, the final whistle confirmed their triumph. They finished the Super Six with 10 points, edging Nasarawa Amazons (9 points) and Edo Queens (8 points) to claim the title.

It marks a remarkable comeback for Bayelsa Queens, who last won the NWFL title in 2022. Their victory also earns them Nigeria’s ticket to the 2025 CAF Women’s Champions League, where they will hope to shine on the continental stage.

NWFL COO Hails Competitive Spirit

NWFL Chief Operating Officer Modupe Shabi  lauded the competitiveness of this year’s Super Six. “This was one of the closest title races in recent memory. The quality of football and the passion on display across all six matchdays show how far the women’s game has come in Nigeria,” she said.

For Bayelsa Queens, it’s a day to remember a hard-fought title, continental qualification, and proof that champions are made under pressure.
