Bayelsa Queens Defeat Rivers Angels 1–0 in NWFL Super Six Opener

Bayelsa Queens kicked off their NWFL Super Six campaign with a 1–0 win over Rivers Angels on Saturday at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.

The only goal of the match came in the 34th minute, when Alaba Olabiyi calmly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Anderline Mgbechi after a clever through-ball from Mercy Omokwo. Bayelsa Queens were the better side in the first half, playing with control and confidence against the five-time league champions.

Rivers Angels had a chance to equalise early in the second half when they were awarded a penalty in the 50th minute. Amblessed Ogbonnaya fouled Taiwo Ajibade inside the box, but Ifeoam Ikenokwalu’s penalty was saved by Bayelsa Queens goalkeeper Monle Omini.

The result gives Bayelsa Queens their second win over Rivers Angels this season in three meetings and shows they are in strong form.

Bayelsa Queens now look ahead to a key group-stage match against Nasarawa Amazons, who beat Naija Ratels 2–1. That game will take place on Monday morning at 9 a.m. at the same venue.

Speaking after the match, Bayelsa Queens’ Technical Adviser, Whyte Ogbonda, said beating a big team like Rivers Angels at this stage shows his team is ready to compete.

“This victory will push my players to do even better in the next games,” he said. “They won’t be relaxed. The biggest motivation for the team comes from the support — both mental and financial — of the Bayelsa State Government, who have provided everything we need for this tournament.”
