Bencic Reaches First Wimbledon Semi-Final After Beating Andreeva

Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic has reached her first Wimbledon semi-final after beating teenage star Mirra Andreeva in a tight and emotional match.

Bencic won 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2) on Centre Court, staying calm throughout while 18-year-old Andreeva struggled to find her best form. Andreeva, ranked seventh and one of the favourites for the title, was often frustrated, while Bencic, ranked 35th in the world, kept her focus.

Bencic, who won Olympic gold in 2021 and had a baby less than a year ago, was two points from winning at 5-4 in the second set. But the match stayed close, with long rallies and tense moments until Bencic finally won in a tie-break.

After the win, 28-year-old Bencic smiled and raised her arms. Andreeva left the court in tears, having missed the chance to reach her second Grand Slam semi-final.

Bencic will now face eighth seed Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals.

Swiatek Makes First Wimbledon Semi-Final

Poland’s Iga Swiatek, the eighth seed, beat Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova 6-2, 7-5 to reach her first semi-final at Wimbledon.

“It feels great. I got goosebumps,” said 24-year-old Swiatek after the match. “I’ve worked hard to improve on grass. This year, I’m learning to enjoy it.”

After the match, Swiatek was seen putting Wimbledon towels in her bag – something she said she does for friends and family.

Swiatek has now won eight matches on grass this year, her best ever on the surface. She is aiming for her sixth Grand Slam title, but still needs to stay focused, especially after some shaky serving in the second set.

Other Semi-Final Match

In the other semi-final, world number one Aryna Sabalenka will play American Amanda Anisimova, the 13th seed.
