Brazil at the FIFA World Cup: History and Hopes for the 2022 edition

Brazil have announced their 26-man squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

With 12 days to kick-off, SportsRation presents Brazil’s FIFA World Cup history plus a preview of their hopes ahead of the 2022 Tournament in Qatar.

HISTORY 

Brazil is the only country that has appeared at every edition of the FIFA World Cup.

Despite a 1-2 loss to Yugoslavia in their first ever world cup match in July 1930, Brazil have gone on to record 73 victories in 109 matches to be decorated as the most successful in the Competitions history.

TITLES 

Brazil ha ve won the FIFA World Cup five (5) times (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002).

BIGGEST WIN 

Brazil’s biggest win at the FIFA World Cup was a 7-1 mauling of Sweden at the 1950 FIFA World Cup.

HEAVIEST DEFEAT 

Not only was it Brazil’s heaviest loss at the FIFA World Cup, a humiliating and painful evening it was for the Brazilian nation as Germany thrashed the Samba boys 7-1 in the Semi-final of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

It was a night where a countries hope for another World Cup title was dashed before their face.

GREATEST PLAYER AT THE WORLD CUP

Pele.

Undoubtedly one of the greatest names in FIFA World Cup history.

Pele inspired Brazil to World Cup titles in 1958 and 1970.

MOST WORLD CUP CAPS 

2002 World-cup winning captain Cafu holds Brazil’s record for most world cup caps (20).

WORLD CUP TOP-SCORER 

Ronaldo scored three times at the 2006 World Cup to beat Pele (12) to Brazil’s top scorer at the FIFA World Cup with 15 goals.

Only Neymar with 6 goals from the 2022 World Cup squad is on Brazil’s top 10 world cup goal scorers chart.

Brazil’s head coach Tite on Monday November 7 announced his squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

HOPES

Brazil are always among the favourites for the title at every FIFA World Cup.

2022 will not be an exception with the South Americans targeting a title to end their 20-year drought.

Interestingly, the last time Brazil won the World Cup in 2002, it was hosted in the Middle East (Korea/Japan).

NEYMAR 

Brazil will be banking on talented PSG forward Neymar in their push for a sixth World Cup title.

The 30-year old will arrive in Qatar with good confidence from a flying start to the season at club level.
