Brazil Held by Mexico in FIFA U20 World Cup Opener

Brazil began their FIFA U20 World Cup campaign with a 2-2 draw against Mexico in Santiago, Chile, on Sunday night, SportsRation reports.

Alexéi Domínguez gave Mexico an early lead in the 10th minute, finishing from close range after Brazil’s defence was caught flat-footed. But the South Americans responded through Rafael Coutinho, who fired in a fine left-footed strike from outside the box in the 21st minute to level the score.

After the break, Brazil looked the stronger side and went in front when Luighi Hanri tapped home from close range in the 76th minute. The Selecão appeared to be heading for victory, but Diego Ochoa struck with a header from a corner in the 86th minute to earn Mexico a late equaliser.

The closing stages were tense, with both teams picking up bookings as emotions ran high. Despite pushing forward, Brazil could not find a winner before the final whistle.

The result means Brazil extend their unbeaten record against Mexico at the U20 World Cup to five matches, though they will be disappointed not to start with a win.

The five-time champions are aiming for a sixth U20 crown, their first since 2011, and will face Spain and Morocco in their remaining Group C fixtures.

Mexico, who have struggled at this level in recent years, will take confidence from holding one of the tournament favourites and will hope to build momentum in their next match.
