Brazil suffer 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup group stage exit after Jamaica draw

Brazil have suffered group stage exit at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup following a 0-0 draw vs Jamaica on Wednesday August 2.

One of the pre-tournament favourites, Brazil needed a victory vs Jamaica to advance from group F.

At the Hindamarsh Stadium, the South Americans toiled in vain search of goals but could not find a way past a determined Jamaican team.

A 4-0 spanking of debutants Panama in their first game was followed by a disappointing 2-1 loss to France to put Brazil in danger of elimination ahead of the game vs Jamaica.

For the Jamaicans, this represents their best performance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup as they finish the group stage without defeat and with a first ever knockout round spot confirmed.

The Raggae ladies defeated Panama, drew vs France and Brazil to finish as group F runners-up behind France who top the section with seven points.

A catastrophe for Brazil whose 37-year old star Martha will sadly finish her last World Cup appearance with a group stage elimination.

The last time Brazil was eliminated from the FIFA Women’s World Cup in the group stage was in 1995.

For Jamaica Coach Donaldson and the Raggae ladies this is an unbelievable achievement for a team that required crowdfunding to participate at the 2023 edition.

Donaldson said “I tell you what, this is one of the best feelings I’ve ever had in my life! To see these girls, to see a country like Jamaica, to be able to do this, is unbelievable to just watch it while I am alive, right here, standing.

” I thank the girls to do this for their country, and the country should be proud. The resilience! The fight! We know it’s a war and we have to be ready. We stayed in the battle and we won the war.

” We have some more work to do but we’ll enjoy tonight. I did a cartwheel (as promised) but I don’t know if it was a good one. I can’t do two cartwheels, I might hurt myself! A cup of beer and I’m good, I’m not a big drinker. I will enjoy it!”

Up next for Jamaica will be a potential last-16 clash vs another South American opposition Colombia.
