Brentford claimed another impressive scalp as they defeated Liverpool 3-1 in their English Premier League clash on Monday. The Bees climbed up to seventh in the standings following their win over the Reds.
Liverpool needed two Wout Faes own goals to overcome Leicester City in their last game and were up against a Brentford side that let a two-goal lead slip against Tottenham Hotspur the last time they faced a “Big 6” side. The Bees were without Ivan Toney, who had suffered an injury in their last game against West Ham United.
Liverpool created the first clear chance inside ten minutes of the match as Darwin Nunez missed a glorious chance from inside the box.
Brentford took the lead in fortuitous fashion as Ibrahima Konate turned the ball into his own net from a corner-kick taken by Bryan Mbeumo in the 19th minute.
The Bees continued to threaten and Yoanne Wissa thought he had doubled their advantage after a goalmouth scramble following another Mbeumo corner, only for the linesman’s flag to cut short his celebration. The Congolese forward saw another effort ruled out for offside after 41 minutes as Ben Mee deflected his shot from an offside position.
It was a case of third time lucky for Wissa as he finally doubled his side’s advantage in the 42nd minute of the encounter. The former FC Lorient man headed home a deep cross from Matthias Jensen to send the home crowd into a frenzy.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp responded by making three changes at half-time, sending on Andrew Robertson, Naby Keita and Joel Matip in a bid to wrest control of the game from Brentford.
The Reds increased their intensity and were almost rewarded instantly as Darwin Nunez expertly lifted the ball over David Raya in the 47th minute, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside by the VAR.
Liverpool saw their efforts bear fruit three minutes later after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain headed home a perfect cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold to halve the deficit.
The Reds pressed for an equaliser, but it was Brentford who had the final say in the game. Mbeumo showed his immense quality to hold off Konate before sliding a finish past Alisson in the 84th minute to seal the points for the Bees.
Brentford defeated Liverpool for the first time since 1938 and have now managed wins against the Reds, Manchester United and Manchester City this season. They have also drawn against Chelsea and Tottenham, with Arsenal the only side to inflict a defeat on them at home this season.
