CAF President reveals one aspect of African football that frustrates him
CAF President Patrice Motsepe has voiced his frustration over the issue of national teams and clubs being forced to play home matches outside their countries due to substandard facilities.
Motsepe’s remarks followed CAF’s decision to ban Ghana from hosting matches at the Baba Yara Stadium, citing the poor condition of the pitch.
The stadium had been the only venue approved for international games in the country. Similarly, Nigerian clubs like Rangers and Enyimba, competing in the CAF inter-club championships, have had to play their home matches at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, rather than in their own stadiums.
During a CAF meeting in Kenya, Motsepe expressed his disappointment, stating, “Nothing frustrates me more than a national team or club side having to play home matches outside.” He stressed the importance of home support in football development, adding, “You can’t grow football if the national teams or club sides aren’t playing in front of their home fans.”
