CAF reveals strategy to for tight WAFCON/Olympic schedule

In the midst of uncertainty surrounding this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has outlined its plan to ensure the smooth execution of the 15th edition slated for Morocco in 2024.

Mr. Luxolo September, Head of Television and Broadcasting (Commercial) at CAF, provided insights into this development during a recent appearance on the South African cable television show, ‘Soccer Africa’, as reported by Blueprint.

Mr. September affirmed that despite the challenges posed by the congested football calendar in 2024, WAFCON 2024 in Morocco remains firmly on track. He reiterated CAF’s unwavering commitment to hosting the tournament this year, notwithstanding the scheduling complexities.

Highlighting the clash between the initially proposed January timeframe for WAFCON and the subsequent dominance of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, Mr. September acknowledged the unavailability of the upcoming FIFA window in July/August due to the Paris Olympics.

Nevertheless, Mr. September expressed optimism, citing ongoing discussions between CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe and European club authorities aimed at securing the release of African players for WAFCON once a suitable date is finalized.
