CAFCC: Rivers United suffer quater-final 1st-leg setback as Young Africans flourish in Uyo
Rivers United FC of Nigeria suffered a quater-final 1st-leg set back as visiting Young Africans SC of Tanzania flourished in a 0-2 win in Uyo.
Young Africans striker Mayele scored with two well taken second half goals to beat the Nigerian Champions at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium Uyo on Sunday April 23.
Rivers United FC will have Sochima Victor to thank for denying the visitors on multiple occasions in a busy first half else the scoreline would have been more.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the 3rd minute of the match, Rivers United were presented with a chance via a free-kick but Nigeria International left-back Ebube Duru fired over the crossbar.
Rivers United FC skipper for the match Nyima Nwagua then failed to get contact on the ball to slide over the line after a cross beat the Young Africans goalie.
The next five minutes saw the visitors come close to breaking the deadlock. In the 10th minute Young Africans Aziz Ki found himself through on goal but his first touch was heavy and so Rivers United goalkeeper Sochima rushed out to save the danger.
The Rivers United goalkeeper was again called into action in the 15th minute as he denied Aziz ki`s effort. Young Africans will then strike the crossbar from the resultant corner kick. Bangala`s header came off the post to the waiting legs of a defender who cleared to safety
In the 19th minute, Sochima saved again before Rivers United created a chance to score soon after. A scramble following a corner kick fell graciously to Chiamaka Madu but his effort went wide of the target.
The Nigerian side will have their goalkeeper to thank for not trailing as he pulled another excellent save to deny Aziz Ki following a one-on-one situation in the 26th minute. The rebound was fired over the crossbar by Young Africans SC`s Fario .
Mudathir had his header saved by Sochima as the first half finished goalless at the Godswill Akpabio International Staduim, Uyo.
In the second half, Micheal Ohawume almost got the opening goal when a mis-timed clearance from the visiting goalkeeper came of him but it was not to be as the goalie recovered to save his error.
Striker Nyima saw his header fly over the crossbar in the 59th minute before Young Africans produced quick-fire chances.
Aziz Ki beat defender Ndasi for pace before cutting in to shot on his left-foot but the effort was blocked for a corner kick. Bangala then hit the side netting with his header from the corner kick in the 70th minute.
In the final quater, Young Africans hit-man Mayele scored two well taken goals. First, the striker was played through and chipped over the on-rushing Sochima before adding the second in the 83rd minute off a counter attack.
At the blast of Referee Tom Abbaringo`s whistle for full-time, it was a 0-2 first-leg win for Young Africans SC. A huge advantage ahead of the return leg in Dar Es Salaam on Sunday April 30.
