Calvin Bassey shines on full debut as Ajax edge Sparta

Super Eagles star helps Dutch champions keep clean sheet

Super Eagles star Calvin Bassey had an impressive performance for Ajax in his Eredivisie debut for the champions as they claimed a 1-0 win away from home against Sparta Rotterdam.

After his big-money transfer from Rangers over the summer, the former Leicester City defender made his debut for the champions in the Dutch Super Cup, lasting only a few minutes before receiving his marching orders for a dangerous foul, earning him a two-match ban in the process.

The 22-year-old made his first start for Ajax in Central defence, with Owen Wijndal dropped to the bench while Daley Blind moved across to left-back. The young defender marshalled the defense well on his debut, helping his side keep a clean sheet against Maduka Okoye’s former side. Former Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn scored the lone goal for the champions to give them all three points.

Calvin Bassey rarely put a foot wrong in the game as he made 110 touches in the game. The former Rangers man also made two tackles, four clearances and seven ball recoveries in the game while maintaining a passing accuracy of 97%. The defender will look to build on his impressive start to life at Ajax in subsequent appearances as his side made it nine points from three matches this season.
