Canelo confident of a knockout in Golovkin fight

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez believes there is a high probability someone will be knocked out in his impending titanic fight against Gennady Golovkin.

The world’s two top middleweights will go head-to-head in an eagerly anticipated bout in Las Vegas on September 16, with Golovkin putting his WBC, WBA and IBF belts on the line.

With 34 of Canelo’s 49 career wins coming via knockout and Golovkin stopping 33 of his 37 opponents in an unbeaten record, the Mexican does not believe the full 12 rounds will be required.

He said: “This is going to be a very tough fight. There are fights that are difficult and there are fights that are tough, and this will be a tough fight.

“I’ll prepare like I always do and be 100 per cent and I’m happy we are giving the fans they wanted. It motivates me that the fans are getting the fight they demanded.

“The key is not to receive, not to stand in front of him and take the punches. I’m going to have be smart, be illusive and counter-punch. He’s a powerful fighter when you start in front of him.

“There’s a high probability there will be a knockout because we both can punch and have a high knockout ratio.”

Golovkin branded the fight the biggest of his career and talked up Canelo’s ability, rating his chances in the fight as 50-50.

“This fight is 50-50. I’m ready to fight, I’m a boxer. I’m really humble. We both have everything. This is different class, the first class,” said Golovkin.

“I respect him, I’ve known his team for a long time. This is the biggest fight in my career. Everybody knows we have power, huge, big boxing IQs.”
