Cavani: I am a mix of modern and traditional striker

Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani sees himself as the combination of modern and traditional striker (“the ultimate finisher”) and says scoring goals is all that matters to him and other strikers.

The Uruguay international tops the Ligue 1 goalscoring charts with 18 goals from as many games, but his finishing continues to be questioned having missed a number of gilt-edged chances this season.

Cavani, however, has no doubt about how clinical he can be.

“My style of game is a bit of a mix between a modern player and a traditional striker, more aggressive. The real ultimate finisher,” Cavani told Sky Sports.

“Scoring a goal feels a bit like a liberating act. It is a mix of sensations that only strikers can feel in their own guts. We work for that, to score. It is like a commitment, an obligation we take with ourselves.

“When you reach the moment to score it is like liberating different emotions such as joy, happiness and also satisfaction. You know you are doing what your team needs, [scoring] goals. For all of this I feel happy and special in a way.

“To become a striker you need dedication, focus and professionalism. When they pass you the ball inside the area, the first thing you think of is to score. To find the best way to finish.

“When you find yourself in between two opposing defenders, the first thing that comes to mind is the movement that gives you the chance and to complete the action before they stop you.”
