CHAN: Senegal defeat Algeria on penalties to be crowned Champions of 7th edition

Senegal have been crowned Champions of the 7th African Nations Championship following a 5-4 penalty shootout victory over Algeria in the final match on Saturday Febuary 4, 2023.

The keenly contested match failed to produce any goals and so ended 0-0 in regulation time with penalties required to determine who takes the title.

In the ensuing shootout, Senegal truimphed 5-4 to be crowned Champions at the expense of tournament hosts Algeria.

Senegal will thus pride as Champions of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament won in February 2022 and Championship of African Nations respectively.

Madagascar will head home with the Algeria 2022 CHAN bronze medal. Madagascar had defeated Niger Republic 1-0 on Friday night to win the Bronze medal.

The Championship of African Nations was first played in 2009, with 8 participating countries.

The just concluded edition is the 7th since the Confederation of African Football – CAF decided to host the tournament for players plying their trade in their home country.

Senegal dethrones 2020 winners Morroco, the North African’s failed to participate in the 2022 edition due to differences with hosts Algeria.
