Chelsea are through to the final of the Club World Cup after beating Brazilian team Fluminense, thanks to two goals from new signing Joao Pedro.
The 23-year-old, playing fully for the first time, scored in the 18th minute. He curled the ball into the net after ex-Chelsea defender Thiago Silva failed to clear a cross from Pedro Neto.
Joao Pedro got his second goal in the 56th minute with a strong shot that hit the bar and went in, securing the win.
Chelsea will earn another £22 million for reaching the final, adding to the £60 million they’ve already made in the tournament. The striker has already started to pay back the £55 million Chelsea paid Brighton for him last week.
Christopher Nkunku had several chances to score more goals. At the other end, Marc Cucurella cleared a shot off the line, and substitute Everaldo had a shot saved.
Fluminense were unhappy after the referee changed his mind about giving a penalty for handball by Trevoh Chalobah, following a VAR review.
Chelsea were the stronger team after scoring first, in a stadium in New Jersey that was nearly full and very hot at 35°C.
The only worry for Chelsea was a possible injury to Moises Caicedo, who hurt his ankle in the 93rd minute and had to leave the pitch before the end of the match.
Chelsea will now play either Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain in Sunday’s final at the same stadium (kick-off 20:00 BST).
