Chelsea set to end their James Rodriguez pursuit over Real Madrid’s huge transfer fee demands

Chelsea’s pursuit of James Rodriguez has hit a snag with reports claiming the club are unwilling to meet Real Madrid’s valuation of the forward.

The Champions League holders are seeking £70million for the Colombia international.

However, Chelsea feel that is extortionate for a player who made just 13 starts in La Liga last season and who wasn’t deemed worthy of a place in the squad for the Champions League final.

The Evening Standard report that Chelsea will not pay that much, potentially spoiling any hope of James Rodriguez moving to Stamford Bridge.

The report comes shortly after suggestions that the Premier League champions had moved ahead in the battle for his services.

The 25-year-old, who was the star of the 2014 World Cup, has also been linked with Manchester United and Arsenal.

Since joining Real Madrid from Monaco after his superb tournament in Brazil Rodriguez has failed to hold down a regular place in the side. However he still managed to bag eight goals last season in his 22 appearances.

Chelsea are in need of reinforcements as they prepare to defend their Premier League title while simultaneously launching an assault on the Champions League. In addition Diego Costa is expected to leave this summer, depleting the side of attacking options.
