Chukwueze asked to step up at AC Milan

AC Milan’s manager, Stefano Pioli, has publicly urged Super Eagles sensation Samuel Chukwueze to step up his performance and become a key player in the team’s attacking line.

The 24-year-old winger, who joined the seven-time UEFA Champions League winners last summer after an impressive six-year stint at Villarreal in Spain’s top flight, is currently facing scrutiny for his underwhelming displays in his new Italian club.

During his time with the Yellow Submarines, Chukwueze clinched the UEFA Europa League title in 2021, notably defeating Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s Manchester United in a thrilling penalty shootout. His impact at Villarreal was substantial, contributing to a total of 68 goals.

However, his transition to AC Milan has not seen a replication of his previous form, with just two goals in twenty-one appearances.

Chukwueze finds himself in a competitive battle for the right-wing position with former Borussia Dortmund star Christian Pulisic.

Pulisic’s stellar performances, boasting eight goals and seven assists across all competitions, have set a high standard. Pioli’s recent comments shed light on the situation, emphasizing the need for Chukwueze to match or surpass Pulisic’s contributions.

“Pulisic and Chukwueze have similar characteristics; they play in the same positions. Pulisic scores goals, provides assists, and creates chances. He works hard, and Chukwueze has to do the same. He needs to score goals, provide assists, and put in the work,” Pioli stated on the club’s official website.

The recent 1-1 draw against Atalanta, where Chukwueze remained on the bench while Ademola Lookman took to the field, sent a clear message from Pioli.

The decision not to utilize Chukwueze underscores the coach’s current stance and his expectation for a more impactful performance from the Nigerian international.

As AC Milan continues its pursuit of domestic and European success, the pressure is on Chukwueze to rise to the occasion, replicating his past achievements and demonstrating his quality in the fiercely competitive Italian Serie A.
