Clinical PSG ruthless as Bayern lose Champions League streak

Neymar and Mbappe star as PSG win at Bayern Munich

Paris St Germain picked up a shock 3-2 victory over Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in Munich as Neymar and Kylian Mbappe contributed 2 assists and 2 goals respectively to avenge their defeat in last season’s Champions League final.

PSG wasted no time to impose themselves and in the third minute, Neymar slipped Kylian Mbappe through and the Frenchman scored at the near post to put his side in front. The visitors soon doubled their advantage as a brilliant Neymar pass caught out the whole Bayern defence, and Marquinhos found himself free in the box to sidefoot a shot beyond Manuel Neuer in goal and make it 2-0 in favour of PSG. Bayern Munich pulled one back through Eric Maxim Choupo Moting, in for the missing Robert Lewandowski when he headed home an inch-perfect cross from Thomas Muller as the first half ended 2-1.

The second half started with Bayern completely dominating the game, and they eventually found themselves an equaliser when a brilliant freekick from Joshua Kimmich was headed into the back of the net by Thomas Muller, drawing them level in the game after 60 minutes. Kylian Mbappe had the final say however, finishing off a swift counter attack with a brilliant dummy and shot that saw his side retake the lead. Bayer were not done, and they controlled the tempo of the game but found no way through as PSG keeper Keylor Navas put up a brilliant performance to ensure that Bayern scored only twice, making more than 10 saves on the night as the game ended 3-2 in favour of the away side.

The result means that Bayern have now lost their first Champions League game since Hansi Flick took over, and their first since March 2019 in general. The defending champions have it all to do at the Parc des Princes next week if they are to book their passage into the semifinals. Kylian Mbappe continues to dazzle as he has now contributed to 42 goals in 43 Champions League appearances, while Neymar is the Brazilian player with the most goals and assists in UEFA Champions League history.
