Coco Gauff Wins First French Open Title After Beating Sabalenka in Final
Coco Gauff has won her first-ever French Open singles title after coming from behind to beat world number one Aryna Sabalenka in a thrilling final.
The American, who was the second seed, won 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-4 after a tough battle in windy conditions at Roland Garros.
This is Gauff’s second Grand Slam title, adding to the US Open crown she won in 2023, which also came against Sabalenka.
“This win was harder than the first because you don’t want to stop at just one,” said the 21-year-old.
Gauff had a slow start, falling two breaks behind early in the match. But she fought back strongly as 27-year-old Sabalenka began making several errors.
“This really hurts. Well done to Coco – she played better than me today,” said Sabalenka, who was aiming for her first French Open title.
The match was full of drama, especially in the first two sets where strong winds caused problems with serving. The players exchanged 12 breaks of serve, making it exciting but sometimes messy.
In the final set, Gauff found her rhythm early and broke Sabalenka’s serve. She then held her nerve and served out the match, saving one last break point before sealing the win when Sabalenka hit a forehand wide.
Gauff dropped to the clay in celebration, while her parents Candi and Corey danced with joy in the stands. She gave Sabalenka a warm hug before running off to celebrate with her family.
