Confirmed: Nigeria’s Super Eagles B to Start CHAN 2024 in Zanzibar

Nigeria’s Super Eagles B will begin their 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) journey in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that Group D games will take place on the island.

Nigeria are in Group D along with current champions Senegal, Congo, and Sudan. Congo was first left out but later added back after Equatorial Guinea was disqualified by CAF’s Appeals Committee.

The CHAN 2024 tournament will run from 2nd to 30th August. It will be hosted by three countries — Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. These same countries will also host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. CAF sees this CHAN as good preparation for that bigger event.

The opening match of the tournament will be played at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Other matches will be held in Kampala, Uganda and Nairobi, Kenya. The final will take place at the Moi International Sports Centre in Nairobi on 30th August.

Nigeria qualified for CHAN 2024 by beating Ghana 3-1 on aggregate in December. The Super Eagles B have a strong record in the competition — they came third in 2014 and were runners-up in 2018, losing 4-0 to Morocco.

CHAN is held every two years and only features players who play in their home country’s leagues. DR Congo and Morocco have each won the tournament twice. Tunisia, Libya, and Senegal have won it once.

This year, Nigeria will hope to win their first CHAN title, starting their campaign in the beautiful setting of Zanzibar.

CHAN 2024 GROUPS:

* Group B (Dar es Salaam): Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic
* Group C (Kampala): Uganda, Niger, Guinea, South Africa, Algeria
* Group D (Zanzibar): Senegal, Congo, Sudan, Nigeria
