In addition to the prison term, Alves has been ordered to compensate the victim with a payment of $163,000 (€150,000). He also faces a nine and a half year restraining order, prohibiting any contact with the victim upon his release, and will be required to serve five years of probation after completing his prison term.
The incident, which occurred in the VIP section of Barcelona’s Sutton nightclub in the early hours of December 31, 2022, resulted in the court ruling that the victim did not consent to sexual intercourse.
Despite Alves’s claims of consent and multiple changes to his statement, the court found him guilty of rape.
The verdict marks a stunning downfall for the former football star, whose career included stints at top clubs like Barcelona and the Brazil national team.
