Dates for Super Falcons Vs Banyana Banyana Women’s Olympic football qualifiers confirmed
The Super Falcons of Nigeria will clash with South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in the final qualifying round for the Women’s Olympic Football event in April 2024.
Randy Waldrum’s squad earned their ticket to the next round by defeating Cameroon 1-0 on aggregate, while South Africa overcame Tanzania to progress to the final qualifiers.
The upcoming matches will see both teams battling it out over two legs, with the first leg scheduled to take place at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Friday, April 5th. The return leg, slated for Tuesday, April 9th in South Africa, is yet to have its venue confirmed.
The winner of this two-legged tie will secure a spot among the 16 senior women’s teams competing in the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament, which is set to commence in Paris on July 16th.
Desiree Ellis, the CAF Coach of the Year and coach of Banyana Banyana, has emphasized her team’s determination to prepare rigorously for the upcoming showdown against the nine-time African champions. Ellis highlighted the importance of early and comprehensive preparation, indicating plans for an early training camp to enhance their chances of success.
“It will be do or die [against Nigeria],” Ellis stated. “We want to have an early camp; we will improve our chances when we prepare early and very well.”
The anticipated encounter between these two formidable teams is expected to be intense as they vie for a coveted spot in the Olympic tournament.
The Super Falcons, 11-time Women’s Africa Cup of Nations champions, will be aiming to secure a place in the tournament for the first time in 16 years.
