Davis drops 59 points as Pelicans beat Pistons, Cavs topple Thunder

Anthony Davis set the NBA alight as he put on a brilliant display for the New Orleans Pelicans during their 111-106 triumph over the Detroit Pistons.

Davis scored 59 points – the highest tally posted by a player since 2014 – and chipped in with a handy 20 rebounds in a classy double-double showing that inspired the Pelicans on their travels.

The star centre set a franchise record in the process and was delighted with his contribution to the result.

“That was a lot of fun, because the rim looked so big that it felt like everything I shot was going to go in,” Davis said.

“I wasn’t keeping track of my point total, but the guys were telling me at the timeouts. They wanted me to get 60.”

Reggie Jackson top-scored for the Pistons with 34 points.

The Cleveland Cavaliers were dominant as they visited the Oklahoma City Thunder, posting a 115-92 win as Kevin Love turned on the style.

Love scored 29 points and had 11 rebounds for the Cavaliers, while LeBron James was on hand to pitch in with a double-double of his own, notching 25 points and 11 assists.

The Thunder’s Russell Westbrook notched 20 points and 11 assists in a double-double but was outscored by team-mate Kevin Durant, who managed 26 points.

The Boston Celtics were too good for the Denver Nuggets as they triumphed 121-101, while the San Antonio Spurs enjoyed their trip to the Phoenix Suns courtesy of a 118-111 win, despite Alex Len’s double-double of 23 points and 13 rebounds for the home side.

Monta Ellis inspired the Indiana Pacers to a 105-102 win away to the Orlando Magic, with the Toronto Raptors triumphing in a low-scoring affair against the Memphis Grizzlies 98-85 as DeMar DeRozan continued his good form to score 21 points.

The Dallas Mavericks thrashed the Philadelphia 76ers 129-103, the Chicago Bulls were on the right side of a similarly one-sided scoreline against the Los Angeles Lakers, winning 126-115.

The Portland Trail Blazers got up over the Utah Jazz 115-111 and the Charlotte Hornets beat the Brooklyn Nets 104-96.
