Diana Shnaider Defeats Leylah Fernandez to Win Tokyo Open Title and Claim Sixth Career Trophy

Diana Shnaider continued her impressive rise in women’s tennis after defeating Leylah Fernandez in a thrilling three-set final to win the 2026 Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, Japan.

The Russian star recovered from a second-set setback to secure a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 victory over the Canadian on Sunday, November 1, claiming her sixth career singles title on the WTA Tour.

Shnaider appeared to be heading towards a comfortable victory after taking the opening set 6-4 and building a commanding 4-0 advantage in the second. However, Fernandez refused to give up, producing an impressive fightback to turn the set around and win it 7-5.

The comeback forced a deciding third set, where Fernandez initially looked capable of completing the turnaround. The Canadian created three break-point opportunities early in the set, but Shnaider showed great composure to save all three and keep the match on level terms.

That moment proved crucial as Shnaider regained control of the contest. She eventually broke Fernandez’s serve in the fifth game before winning the next three games to seal an impressive 6-2 victory.

The final lasted two hours and 18 minutes, with Shnaider demonstrating the resilience and determination needed to overcome a difficult challenge from her opponent.

The Tokyo triumph marks Shnaider’s first title of the 2026 season and the sixth singles trophy of her professional career.

For Fernandez, the defeat represents another disappointing final after reaching the championship match at the Ningbo Open the previous week. Nevertheless, the Canadian once again demonstrated her fighting spirit by pushing Shnaider all the way.

Shnaider’s victory in Tokyo provides a memorable end to her tournament campaign and further establishes her as one of the players to watch on the women’s tennis circuit.
