The difference between the Ballon d’Or and Best Fifa Awards

The Best Fifa Football Awards which staged its second edition on Monday at the world-famous London Palladium theatre on Monday is different to the Ballon d’Or.

A version of the Ballon d’Or has been awarded by France Football magazine since 1956. The Fifa World Player of the Year award was merged in a partnership with France Football’s Ballon d’Or in 2010 to become the Fifa Ballon d’Or for the next six years.

FIFA agreed to pay £13million to merge the two awards, with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo the big winners as the two La Liga stars dominated throughout the six-year deal.

FIFA decided not to renew the deal in 2016, meaning the Ballon d’Or lost its ‘Fifa’ tag and reverted back to being voted for by journalists as a separate award as Fifa’s The Best awards were created.

While voting for the player and coach categories was by national team captains and managers, selected journalists and, for the first time, an online poll of fans, each accounting for 25% of the total in The Best Fifa Men’s Player, the captains of FIFA’s national teams, their managers and a media member from each country vote for the Ballon d’Or.
