Disappointed Day relishing U.S. Open battle
World number one Jason Day lamented his performance at the U.S. Open on Friday as he hovers dangerously close to the cut line.
A marathon day at Oakmont Country Club came to a close with Day five over after the Australian star was one under through 15 holes of his second round when bad light suspended play.
Day struggled throughout in Pennsylvania as he opened the weather-affected tournament with a 76 – his first over-par opening round in his last 25 starts.
The 28-year-old, who will return on Saturday morning to complete his second round, is one stroke above the projected cut line and nine adrift of leaders Dustin Johnson and Andrew Landry.
“It was just a really long day and I’m disappointed with my first round because that is what got me in the position I am in,” Day said.
“But I have three holes left to see if I can improve that score and I’m looking forward to trying to do that tomorrow.
“The three holes tomorrow are important to make the final two rounds and then I will be trying hard to get back to even par for this championship because it’s going to get tougher over the weekend and hopefully that will have me back in it.”
