Djed Spence set to become first male Muslim footballer to play for England

Tottenham defender Djed Spence has said it is a “blessing” to be on the verge of making history, as he could become the first male footballer who openly identifies as a Muslim to play for England’s senior team.

The 25-year-old has been called up for the first time by England manager Thomas Tuchel for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia.

Speaking from England’s training camp, Spence said:

“I saw something about that — being the first. It’s amazing, really. I don’t even have the words. It’s a blessing.”

Though proud of the moment, Spence said he didn’t feel extra pressure:

“I just play football with a smile on my face.”

Faith and Football

Spence has often spoken about how important faith is in his life. On social media, he regularly shares posts about his religion.

“God is the greatest,” he said. “I pray a lot. In the hardest times of my life, I always believed God was with me. When I’m doing well, I thank Him too. My faith means a lot to me.”

A Long Road to the Top

Spence’s journey to the England team hasn’t been quick. After impressing in the Championship with Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest, he joined Tottenham in 2022.

However, he struggled at first under then-manager Antonio Conte and was sent out on loan to Rennes, Leeds, and Genoa.

It took two and a half years for Spence to finally make his full debut for Spurs. That season ended on a high, as he helped the team win the Europa League, coming off the bench in the final.

“Without a strong mentality, you can’t reach the top,” Spence said. “I’ve had people doubt me, but it feels good to prove them wrong.”

Inspiring the Next Generation

Spence now hopes to inspire children — from all backgrounds.

“If I can do it, you can do it,” he said. “Not just Muslim kids, any child. If you believe in yourself and work hard, anything is possible.”

England play Andorra at Villa Park on Saturday, and then travel to Belgrade to face Serbia on Tuesday.
The team has won all three of their matches in Group K so far.
