Djokovic too good for Del Potro, books Internazionali BNL d’Italia semi-final spot

Novak Djokovic wasted no time booking his place in the Internazionali BNL d’Italia semi-final as he wrapped up a straight-sets win over Juan Martin del Potro.

The two heavyweights were forced to come back on Saturday to complete their quarter-final due to heavy rain in Rome, but once back on court Djokovic was in no mood to hang around and he secured a 6-1 6-4 triumph.

He already had a one-set lead from Friday and the former world number one quickly claimed a break off the Del Potro serve to put the semis in sight – his groundstrokes crisp and played with pinpoint accuracy.

It was not all plain sailing for Djokovic, though, as he twice misjudged lob shots with his opponent stranded.

Luckily it did not cost him as errors crept into Del Potro’s game, the Argentine – who is now ranked 34 – unable to take advantage of rare pressure on the Djokovic serve in the sixth game of the set.

Having saved that break point it was relatively plain sailing for the four-time champion as he booked a last-four spot against Dominic Thiem later on Saturday.

Djokovic goes into that semi-final with an unbeaten record at that stage in Rome, and he will hope to maintain that to give him confidence heading into the French Open.
