Djokovic survives Fritz scare, Kyrgios dumped out on Day Five of Australian Open

Williams, Osaka, Halep through to last 16

World number 1, Novak Djokovic had to dig deep to advance past American Taylor Fritz and avoid an embarrassing upset in their third round Australian Open meeting. He won the game in five sets 7-6 6-4 3-6 4-6 6-2. Djokovic now faces Milos Raonic in the last 16 of the tournament.

World number 3, Dominic Thiem came back from two sets down to defeat home favourite, Nick Kyrgios and seal a fourth round place against Grigor Dmitrov. The match ended in the Austrian Thiem’s favour 4-6 4-6 6-3 6-4 6-4.

Germany’s Alexander Zverev continued his impressive form as he defeated Adrian Mannarino 6-3 6-3 6-1 in straight sets to advance to the last 16 of the Australian Open. Zverev will now face Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic for a place in the Quarterfinals.

Russia’s Aslan Karatsev upset Argentine World number 8, Diego Schwartzmann 6-3 6-3 6-3 in straight sets to book a place win the last 16 of the tournament.

Milos Raonic defeated Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics in four sets 7-6 5-7 6-2 6-2 to qualify for the fourth round of the 2021 Australian Open where he’ll face world number 1, Novak Djokovic.

In the women’s event, French Open holder, Iga Swiatek continued with a 6-4 6-3 straight sets win over Fiona Ferro to set up a tasty clash against Simona Halep in the last 16.

World number 10, Serena Williams continued with her bid to win her 24th grand slam crown and equal Margaret Court’s haul as she defeated Anastasia Potapova 7-6 6-2 to book her round of 16 clash against Aryna Sabalenka.

Romania’s world number 2, Simona Halep beat Veronika Kudermetova 6-1 6-3 to progress to the fourth round of the 2021 Australian Open.

World number 3, Naomi Osaka defeated Ons Jabeur 6-3 6-2 in straight sets to set up a place in the last 16 where she will face Spain’s Garbine Muguruza.

Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-Wei continued her impressive run in this year’s Australian Open as she defeated her long time nemesis, Sara Errani 6-4 2-6 7-5 to book a place in the last 16.
