Doma United on the verge of NPFL relegation following home loss to Sunshine Stars
Doma United FC are on the verge of relegation from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) following a disappointing 0-1 home loss to Sunshine Stars FC of Akure.
The rescheduled NPFL clash, held at the Pantami Stadium in Gombe on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, saw both teams aiming to secure crucial points in their battle for survival with one game remaining this season.
Ahead of the game, Doma United’s slim survival hopes suffered a setback with the news that coach Bala Abubakar had resigned from his position at the club.
Additionally, reports of players not training due to unpaid salaries emerged, a situation that Kennedy Boboye’s Sunshine Stars exploited to their advantage to secure their top-flight status.

Yusuf Ibrahim scored the only goal of the match in the 37th minute to stun the home team and ensure Sunshine Stars’ safety ahead of the final game of the season.
As it stands, Doma United will need a miracle to survive the drop as they trail 16th-placed Akwa United by 3 points, with a significant -16 goal difference and only one game left.
On the last day, Doma United must beat Abia Warriors by at least a 16-goal margin and hope that Sporting Lagos and Akwa United lose their respective games to avoid relegation.
Doma United has witnessed a remarkable decline in the second half of the 2023/2024 NPFL season, having at one point occupied one of the top three positions on the log.
