Dortmund Knocked Out of Club World Cup by Real Madrid

Borussia Dortmund are out of the Club World Cup after losing 3-2 to Real Madrid in the quarter-finals on Saturday. The match took place at MetLife Stadium.

Dortmund went behind early, after just 10 minutes. Young striker Gonzalo Garcia, who was given another chance by coach Xabi Alonso, scored from a cross and had no trouble beating goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

Things got worse for Dortmund in the 20th minute. This time, Fran Garcia scored from close range after a perfect pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold, making it 2-0 to Real Madrid.

Real dominated the first half and could have scored more if they had finished better. Dortmund had a few chances but were clearly second-best before the break.

Coach Niko Kovac made three changes at half-time, and Dortmund started the second half looking a bit sharper. However, they still couldn’t create many real chances, and Real Madrid slowly took control again.

Later in the match, Real pushed for a third goal, but goalkeeper Kobel made some great saves to keep Dortmund in the game.

Dortmund pulled one back in injury time, when Maximilian Beier scored with a powerful shot. But almost straight after, Kylian Mbappé, who came on as a substitute, scored a brilliant acrobatic goal to make it 3-1 to Real.

Dortmund didn’t give up. Serhou Guirassy won a penalty after being fouled by Dean Huijsen, who was sent off. Guirassy scored from the spot to make it 3-2.

Marcel Sabitzer nearly equalised in the final moments, but his shot was saved by Thibaut Courtois, who helped Real Madrid secure the win.

Dortmund’s loss means no more German teams are left in the tournament, after Bayern Munich were also knocked out earlier on Saturday by Paris Saint-Germain.

Real Madrid will now play PSG in the semi-finals. In the other semi-final, Fluminense will take on Chelsea.
