DR Congo overcome Guinea 3-1 to secure AFCON 2023 semi-final berth

DR Congo secured a spot in the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations by coming from behind to beat Guinea 3-1 in the quater-final clash on Friday, Febuary 2, 2024.

Guinea took the lead from a penalty kick after twenty minutes of action but DR Congo rallied back to win the game in convincing manner.

Here’s a brief summary of the match:

  • First Half:
    • Mohamed Bayo put Guinea ahead with a 20th-minute penalty.
    • Chancel Mbemba equalized for DR Congo seven minutes later with a goal from a narrow angle.
  • Second Half:
    • DR Congo took the lead with a penalty converted by Yoane Wissa after Julian Jeanvier fouled Silas.
    • Arthur Masuaku sealed the victory with a free-kick that caught Guinea goalkeeper Ibrahim Kone off guard.

DR Congo will now await the winner of the quarter-final match between Mali and hosts Ivory Coast for their semi-final clash.

In the other quater-final game decided on Friday, Nigeria defeated Angola 1-0 to reach the last-4.

Ademola Lookman scored the only goal to hand the Eagles a place in the Semis.
