Edo Queens thrash Confluence Queens 5-1 in NWFL Super Six opener

Edo Queens dismantled Confluence Queens 5-1 in the opening game of the NWFL Super Six held at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

Edo Queens’ Emem Essien and Goodness Osigwe each scored twice, while Chioma Moses added a 34th-minute strike, securing a decisive victory for the Benin Arsenals. The team went into halftime with a commanding 4-1 lead and added another goal in the second half, leaving their opponents from Lokoja reeling.

Head Coach Moses Aduku described the victory as a “sweet revenge” for the defeat his team suffered at the hands of Confluence Queens last season. Reflecting on the match, Aduku said, “I give thanks to God for the victory. My girls worked very hard, and we took our opportunities well. Last season, we didn’t take our chances, but this time we made them count.”

Aduku acknowledged Confluence Queens’ strength, noting that they are not an easy team to beat. “Confluence is a good team; they are not a pushover. They had a few chances but failed to convert them. This win is payback for us. We are here for serious business, taking it one game at a time.”

Looking ahead, Aduku said he is now focused on the next match. “We are done with this game, and our attention is now on the next one. We are here to win, and the government back home has done so much for us. It is our turn to reciprocate their good gesture. For us, we are in Bayelsa to win.”

Edo Queens’ impressive start to the NWFL 2023/24 Super Six sets a high bar for the competition.

In other results on day one of the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Championship Playoff, Rivers Angels came from behind to hold Bayelsa Queens 1-1 while Nassarawa Amazons and Heartland Queens also ended in a draw.
