Ekong to Nigerians after Equatorial Guinea draw: “Dont give up on us”

Following the Super Eagles’ 1-1 vs Equatorial Guinea in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations first group game, matchday captain William Troost-Ekong has urged Nigerian football fans not to give up on the team despite the setback.

In a keenly contested match in Abidjan, Equatorial Guinea’s Iban Salvador broke the deadlock in the 36th minute, only for Victor Osimhen to swiftly equalize a minute later with a header.

Despite numerous chances created by the Super Eagles, the opposing goalkeeper, Jesus Owono, put in a superb performance, denying the Nigerians the opportunity to secure a victory.

William Troost-Ekong, who anchored the defense alongside Semi Ajayi, expressed gratitude to the Nigerian fans for their support.

In his post-match press conference, the 30-year-old defender acknowledged the disappointment surrounding the draw but emphasized the need to focus on the positives.

“I just want to say thank you for the support for the guys that came out there. Of course, we’re disappointed; we feel the same way as you guys, we wanted to win today, but I think we have to look at the positives,” stated the former Watford defender.

Troost-Ekong highlighted the team’s positive aspects, mentioning the creation of numerous chances and expressing optimism that on another day, they would have secured a victory.

Looking ahead to their next challenge against The Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire on Thursday, January 18, 2024, the captain assured fans that the Super Eagles would be highly motivated.

“We created a lot of chances, and on another day we would have won that game, and will be very motivated for Wednesday. Don’t give up on us,” added the PAOK defender.

As both teams aim to gain ground in their quest for qualification, the Super Eagles are set to face The Elephants of in their second Group A game hoping for a win to put them in good stead ahead of the last group game vs Guinea Bissau.
