England´s Anderson becomes most prolific seamer in Test history

England’s James Anderson became the most prolific Test wicket taker among seam bowlers with the match-winning dismissal of India’s Mohammed Shami at the Oval on Tuesday.

Anderson claimed his 564th scalp by removing Shami on the fifth day of the final Test to surpass Glenn McGrath and assume fourth position on the all-time list in the longest format.

Only spinners Muttiah Muralitharan (800), Shane Warne (708) and Anil Kumble (619) remain ahead of the 36-year-old.

Anderson – who trapped Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara lbw in Monday’s final session to move level with McGrath – reached the landmark in his 143rd Test appearance, 19 more than the Australia icon required to accumulate his haul of 563.

The achievement capped off a celebratory couple of days for England, who on Monday saw Alastair Cook make an emotional century in his final Test appearance, eventually departing for 147 before receiving handshakes from every single India player and a rousing standing ovation from the Oval crowd.
