Enyeama responds to Super Eagles links

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, has set the record straight regarding rumors circulating about his potential appointment as part of the backroom staff for the Nigerian national team ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.

Last week, Enyeama’s comment on a Super Eagles post on social media sparked speculation about his involvement with the team, as he stated, “Let’s gooooo. See you in camp. Time for business.”

Many interpreted this as an indication that he had been appointed as part of the backroom staff, potentially as a goalkeeper trainer given the current absence of a top national team goalkeeper.

However, Enyeama has clarified that there has been no official appointment by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and no discussions in that regard.

He explained that his comment was a personal expression of support, intending to visit the team during the AFCON and provide encouragement to the players.

“I haven’t been given any appointment by the NFF, neither was there any such discussion. That was only a personal comment, meaning I will visit them in camp when I attend the AFCON.

“Any opportunity to encourage the lads, I use it,” Enyeama said as quoted by popular journalist Mighty George via his X handle.

With the 2023 AFCON set to kick off in January, Enyeama’s clarification comes amid heightened anticipation and scrutiny surrounding the Super Eagles’ preparations for the continental tournament.

Nigeria is scheduled to start their campaign on January 14 against Equatorial Guinea, followed by matches against Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau.
