Enzo Maresca reveals who is the first choice goalkeeper at Chelsea

Enzo Maresca confirmed on Thursday that Filip Jorgensen has replaced Robert Sanchez as Chelsea’s number one goalkeeper as the team looks to get back on track in the Premier League.

Sanchez, 27, from Spain, has made several costly mistakes this season, including in the 3-1 loss to Manchester City last month.

Jorgensen, a 22-year-old goalkeeper from Denmark, started in the 2-1 win against West Ham earlier this month, but Sanchez was back in goal for the FA Cup defeat at Brighton last week.

Maresca, whose team will face Brighton again on Friday, confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Jorgensen is now his first-choice goalkeeper.

The Italian coach said he had given Sanchez “some time to recover mentally and physically.”

However, he added, “The idea is not to change the keeper every game. The last Premier League match we won against West Ham was with Filip, and the FA Cup game was with Robert, but our goalkeeper right now is Filip.”

Chelsea were just two points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool in mid-December, but their results have slipped since then.

Maresca believes his team, currently in fourth place and still on track for Champions League qualification, has made good progress in his first season at the club.

He said, “I don’t think what we have done can be erased or ignored because what we have done is there.”

“Unfortunately, we’re out of both domestic cups, but our Premier League journey has been great so far, and the Conference League has also been fantastic. We’ll try to finish as well as we can.”

Maresca also said, “I’ve said many times, don’t forget that in the last two years, Chelsea wasn’t in the top four, but this year we’ve spent almost the whole season in the top four. This shows that we’re on the right path. Now we’ll do our best to finish strong and get this club where it belongs – in the Champions League.”
