Liverpool faced Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday night at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with the EPL title quickly getting out of their reach. The champions were on 34 points, 7 behind current leaders Manchester City and in 5th place on the log. They had lost their last two games against Burnley in the league, and Manchester United in the FA Cup. They had also failed to score a league goal in over 400 minutes of EPL football.
The Reds showed their title credentials with a brilliant showing against Jose Mourinho’s Spurs side and took the lead through Roberto Firmino in first half added time. Tottenham lost talisman, Harry Kane to injuries in both ankles at the break, and two minutes after the restart, one became two when Trent Alexander-Arnold rifled home the rebound following a Mane shot. Shortly after, Pierre Emile Hojbjerg scored a brilliant strike from outside the box to halve the deficit. Mohamed Salah thought he had made it 3-1, but VAR denied him and moments later, Senegalese forward, Sadio Mane made it three, volleying home a pass from Alexander-Arnold. Both Harry Kane and Joel Matip picked up injuries in the game.
The win was Liverpool’s sixth consecutive one against Tottenham Hotspur and took them up to 4th on the EPL table. Tottenham remain in 6th place, 4 points outside the top 4 with one game in hand over their rivals.
