Eric Chelle Not Leaving Super Eagles for Morocco, Says Team Media Officer

Super Eagles Media Officer Promise Efoghe has dismissed reports claiming that Nigeria’s head coach Eric Chelle is set to leave his role to take charge of the Moroccan national team.

Speculation about Chelle’s future has grown since the end of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where he led the Nigeria national football team to a third-place finish. Despite the podium finish, some fans and analysts believed the team had the quality to win the tournament because of their attractive style of play.

In recent months, Chelle has been linked with several coaching jobs across Africa. Reports suggested that the former Mali national football team manager could take up vacancies in Algeria, Tunisia, and Angola. There were also rumours that he was being considered by Olympique de Marseille after the club parted ways with Roberto De Zerbi earlier this year.

The speculation increased when Chelle reportedly changed his football agent, although no official move followed.

More recently, reports claimed that the coach was close to replacing Walid Regragui as the head coach of the Morocco national football team. Morocco are currently searching for a new manager ahead of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, Efoghe has now described the reports as false, insisting that Chelle is not in line for the Moroccan job.

“Those reports are fake,” Efoghe said on Monday, stressing that the coach remains fully focused on his duties with Nigeria.

Chelle is therefore expected to continue his work with the Super Eagles for now. Still, questions about his long-term future remain, especially as he enters the final year of his contract.

The coach recently confirmed that a leaked list of his contract demands was genuine. Since then, it is still unclear whether the Nigeria Football Federation and Chelle have made progress in negotiations over a possible contract extension.
