Ese Brume shatters Commonwealth Record, wins 12th Gold for Team Nigeria
Ese Brume continued to impress in the Green-White-Green of Nigeria as she broke the Commonwealth Games record to emerge with the gold medal in the women’s long jump.
Ese Brume had qualified for the final automatically after a scintillating performance in the preliminary rounds. The “serial medalist”, as the commentators in Birmingham referred to her, was intent on regaining the Commonwealth long jump crown she won in 2014 but was unable to defend in 2018.
Brume saw her first attempt disqualified before stunning the world with her second leap, breaking the Commonwealth record with a leap of 6.99m. She wasn’t done yet as she still had it in her to break her own record by 0.01m, leaping to a distance of 7.00m to secure her gold medal.
Team Nigeria’s other representative in the final, Ruth Usoro, finished in sixth place with a leap of 6.56m in what was her first Commonwealth Games.
Brume’s win ensured that Nigeria won its 12th gold medal of the 2022 Commonwealth Games, setting a new record for gold medals won by the country in an international event.
