Etebo-Shawcross and Clucas’ penalty miss: What really happened?

Super Eagles midfielder, Oghenekaro Etebo was involved in an argument with his club captain Ryan Shawcross over penalty responsibility in Stoke City’s 2-0 home loss to Preston in a Championship game on Saturday.

The visitors won the tie after scoring a goal either half. For the first goal in the 20th minute, Preston full back Fisher cuts inside Tymon right of the Stoke goal and when the ball breaks just outside the box there’s Browne to sweep a low and well-timed effort past Butland and inside his left-hand post.

For the second goal in the 80th minute, Stoke were caught horribly short on the break – not long after seeing an effort of their own cleared off the line – and it was Potts hitting the back of the net with the home side all at sea.

With Stoke City’s back against the wall, Super Eagles midfielder, Oghenekaro Etebo was the only one trying to make something happen for the Potters.

His forward run was rewarded in the 90th minute of game when a penalty was awarded after he was fouled in the box. He took the ball to play the spot kick but his captain took it from him and handed it over to Sam Clucas who failed to convert from the 12 yard.

There were debates as to why Etebo who won the penalty wasn’t allowed to take the penalty.

Sportsration.com gathered that Ryan Shawcross acted on the coach instruction and the coach himself confirmed on radio after the match that Clucas was the other designated penalty taker and that it was in the tactics board prior to kick-off.

Benik Afobe is the primary penalty taker and Sam Clucas the secondary taker.

Benik Afobe was not on the pitch at the time of the incident, hence the reason why Ryan Shawcross got the ball from Etebo and handed it to Clucas whose effort was saved.

Stoke City have now missed 7 of their 9 last penalties.
