Euro 2024: Netherlands book England semi-final clash with comeback win over Turkey

The Netherlands came from behind to defeat Turkey 2-1, securing their place in the Euro 2024 semi-finals where they will face England.

Despite trailing at half-time, a second-half resurgence inspired by substitute Wout Weghorst led to the Dutch victory.

Turkey dominated the first half and capitalized on their advantage in the 35th minute when Arda Guler’s precise cross found Samet Akaydin, who headed home from close range. Netherlands struggled in the first half, but Weghorst’s introduction at the break provided a much-needed spark.

Weghorst replaced Steven Bergwijn and immediately made an impact, creating an opportunity for Memphis Depay. Though Turkey continued to threaten, with Guler hitting the post and Kenan Yildiz forcing a save from Bart Verbruggen, the Netherlands finally broke through in the 70th minute. Depay’s corner found Stefan de Vrij, who headed in the equalizer. Moments later, a cross from Denzel Dumfries led to an own goal by Mert Muldur, putting the Netherlands ahead.

Turkey’s late attempts to equalize were thwarted by the Dutch defense, with Micky van de Ven blocking Zeki Celik’s effort and Verbruggen making a crucial save from Semih Kilicsoy in stoppage time. The victory set up a semi-final clash with England, adding another chapter to the Netherlands’ Euro 2024 campaign.
