Evelyn Oyome crowned 25th IBB ladies open champion
Evelyn Oyome, representing Ikoyi Club 1938, was crowned champion at the 25th IBB Ladies Open in Abuja on Sunday, February 18, 2024.
Oyome secured the championship title for the second consecutive year, showcasing exceptional skill throughout the three-day tournament.
With a total gross score of 242, she outshone her competitors to claim the coveted top prize of the 2024 championship.
Taking the lead after the second day of play, Oyome maintained her pole position with a four-shot advantage, setting the stage for an intense showdown on the final day.
She faced stiff competition, particularly from Kabasweka Peace of Uganda.
Expressing her delight at the win, Oyome shared her gratitude and attributed her success to dedication and consistent practice. “I am filled with joy for winning this tournament for the second time,” she remarked. “Defending the championship and winning it back-to-back is a great joy for me, and I am happy I did it.”
Grace Agbo of IBB International Golf County and Club secured the third-place gross, posting a total score of 252. Meanwhile, Ugbegu Igho of Asaba claimed the nett prize with a remarkable score of 218, followed closely by Sandra Haruna of the IBB Golf Club and Lady Captain Folashade Olateju, who settled for second and third place, respectively, in the nett category.
Reflecting on the success of the championship, Lady Captain Folashade Olateju expressed gratitude for the smooth running of the competition and praised the participants’ dedication. “The championship has been a huge success,” she remarked. “Thank God for making it a big success.”
Acknowledging the tough competition posed by the Ugandan players, Olateju emphasized the commitment and focus demonstrated by Nigerian golfers, despite juggling other responsibilities. “The Ugandans, we won’t deceive ourselves, are good players,” she noted. “They are better because most of them face the game squarely, whereas we, Nigerian women, have some other things we do besides playing golf.”
