Falconets pummel South Africa 8 – 0, earns world cup spot
Nigeria ’s U- 20 women ’ s national team the
Falconets on Saturday defeated South Africa’s
Basetsana 6 – 0 to qualify for the France 2018 U- 20
Women’s World Cup .
The Falconets thus defeated their South African
counterpart 8 – 0 on aggregate in the final
qualifiers , having won the first led 2 – 0 in
Polokwane a fortnight ago .
Goals from Monday Gift , Rasheedat Ajibade , Imo
Mary and Ucheibe Onyenaturuchi were enough for
the Nigerian side to seal the victory at the Samuel
Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City .
Monday opened scoring for the Falconets after
seven minutes with an assist from Rashedaat
Ajibade .
Ajibade then turned scorer in the 21st minute. Five
minutes later Anam Imo made it 3 – 0 off a rebound,
before Ajibade got her brace in the 32nd minute .
Monday then got her own brace on 39 minutes .
However, Monday was sent off three minutes from
time after a second booking for a poor tackle .
The coach of the Falconets , Christopher Danjuma,
expressed satisfaction with the performance of his
team .
He stated, “ Having beaten a team (South Africa) by
two goals (in Polokwane ) nobody wanted to bow
down in a World Cup qualifier. The statements
they (South Africa) kept making helped us a lot .
Rather than making us to rest on our laurels, they
made us to work even harder. ”
Basetsana, Maud Khumalo, congratulated the
Falconets, who she said had the home advantage
and experience .
