Fernandes nets hat trick as Manchester United record opening day win

Varane unveiled, Sancho debuts for Manchester United

Bruno Fernandes scored a hat trick as Manchester United got their season underway with a resounding 5-1 win over Leeds United at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Manchester United unveiled new signing Raphael Varane before kick-off as the defender completed a £34 million transfer to the Red Devils. It took them 30 minutes to get going, but they did it in style as Fernandes fired home after a brilliant pass from Paul Pogba. Leeds captain Luke Ayling scored the equaliser for them just three minutes into the second half before the home side raised their game. Four goals followed in the next 20 minutes as Manchester United bamboozled a dazed Leeds United side. Mason Greenwood scored in the 52nd minute, converting another Pogba pass before Fernandes completed his hat trick with a quickfire double in the 54th and 60th minutes. Brazilian midfielder Fred added gloss to the scoreline with a fifth from yet another Pogba pass in the 68th minute. Summer acquisition Jadon Sancho was introduced in the 75th minute for his Manchester United debut, replacing Daniel James.

Manchester United’s win puts them on top of the Premier League table after the opening round of matches. The Red Devils have now gone three successive games against Leeds United without losing, having won once and drawn once against Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds last season in the league. Pogba recorded four assists in the game, the most he has ever assisted in a single game in his Manchester United career.
