FIBAWCQ: Ike Diogu stars as Nigeria beat Senegal 89-61 to maintain unbeaten run
Nigeria’s men national basketball team captain Ike Diogu led the team as D’Tigers beat Senegal 89-61 in their last FIBA World Cup qualifiers game played in Lagos on Sunday to stay without a loss.
Even though Nigeria become the first country to qualify for FIBA World Cup to be staged in China next year after trashing their opponents from Central Africa Republic 114-69 on Saturday, they didn’t relax as they beat their perennial rivals, Senegal, on Sunday to ensure their unbeaten run remains intact.
Ike Diogu was Nigeria’s top performer with 17 points and 9 rebounds, Al-Farouq Aminu dropped 12 points, and 8 rebounds while Ikenna Iroegbu added 10 points.
As expected Gorgui Dieng led the Senegalese charge but his 17 points and 9 rebounds couldn’t stop rampaging D’Tigers.
The victory means D’Tigers have won all 9 of their games in the window four qualifiers while ending Senegal’s 6-game unbeaten run.
Nigeria will continue to participate in the qualifiers despite the fact that they have booked their place in the finals with three games to go.
The next and last qualifiers games will be played will be played in February 2019 where Nigeria play Ivory Coast, Central African Republic, and Senegal on 22nd, 23rd, and 24th respectively.
