FIFA adjusts AFCON 2025 Players release Window
FIFA has confirmed a major adjustment ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, and it is already sparking debate. The organisation has decided that clubs must release their players for AFCON duty by December 15, which is only one week before the tournament kicks off in Morocco.
The competition is scheduled to run from December 21 to January 18, and the shortened window means European clubs will be able to keep their African stars for a little longer before they depart.
This decision benefits teams like Manchester United, for example, who will have Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo available for an extra league match before they leave for their national teams.
Liverpool also stands to gain, as Mohamed Salah will stay with the squad slightly longer before heading to represent Egypt. Chelsea, Arsenal, and other clubs with key African players will enjoy the same advantage.
On the other side of the debate, several African federations are not happy with FIFA’s decision. They feel the move undermines their preparation time and prioritises European football at their expense.
Morocco, the host nation, could even lose one of its players earlier than the new release date, depending on internal arrangements, which makes the situation even more complicated. To calm disputes, FIFA has said it will step in and mediate cases where clubs and national teams disagree.
The decision may help European clubs manage their hectic December schedule, but it has definitely added tension ahead of the tournament.
