FIFA Club World Cup: Al-Hilal and Salzburg Play Out Goalless Draw in Sweltering Conditions
Al-Hilal and Salzburg shared the points in a goalless draw during their second group-stage match at the FIFA Club World Cup, played in extreme heat at Audi Field on Monday evening.
Temperatures reached up to 35°C as both sides battled through a demanding contest, with Al-Hilal — coached by Simone Inzaghi — fielding a side full of individual talent. Despite the conditions, Salzburg produced a strong, disciplined performance and came close to securing all three points.
The match began with high intensity. Al-Hilal registered the first notable chance in the third minute, but it was Salzburg who nearly opened the scoring shortly after, as Onisiwo fired a volley narrowly wide in the ninth minute.
The first quarter of an hour saw both teams trade attacks in a lively start, but Al-Hilal gradually asserted more control. Their sustained pressure forced Salzburg’s defence, led by Jacob Rasmussen, into a series of key interventions.
A scheduled drinks break after the half-hour mark provided much-needed relief amid the relentless pace and heat. Following the pause, Al-Hilal began to dominate possession, but Salzburg continued to defend with composure.
The best chances of the match fell to Salzburg early in the second half. Substitute John Mellberg was left unmarked from a corner in the 48th minute, only to be denied by Al-Hilal goalkeeper Bono. Moments later, Dorgeles Nene saw his effort cleared off the goal line.
Although Al-Hilal maintained attacking pressure throughout, they were unable to break down a well-organised back line. Salzburg saw more of the ball in the second half and looked the stronger side in the closing stages.
Maurits Kjaergaard returned from injury for Salzburg late in the match, and goalkeeper Christian Zawieschitzky made a key save to preserve the clean sheet. Despite the lack of goals, the match delivered an entertaining contest for the neutral audience.
Both teams remain in contention to progress from the group. Salzburg will next face Real Madrid in Philadelphia.
